AMA Introductory Pilot Program (IPP)
Discover Model Aviation—Risk-Free!
The AMA Introductory Pilot Program offers a free, 90-day opportunity for non-members to explore the world of model aviation under the supervision of a certified Intro Pilot Mentor (IPM). This program includes liability insurance and is open to all categories of model flying.
What You Get
- 90 days of insurance-covered instruction
- One-on-one mentorship from a certified AMA Intro Pilot
- Email access to AMA benefits and membership info
Note: IPP participation is a one-time opportunity and does not include event participation or a physical AMA membership card.
How It Works
- Designate an IPM: A club officer submits a designation form for a current AMA member to become an Intro Pilot Mentor.
- Start Flying: Mentors supervise non-members directly at club sites using safe training aircraft. Buddy-box systems are recommended.
- Register Your Student: Submit their registration within 48 hours of the first flight.
Insurance Coverage
- Up to $2,500,000 in liability per incident
- No deductible for property damage claims under IPP
- Coverage is secondary to any personal or homeowner's policy
Responsibilities
Mentors & Clubs Must:
- Keep accurate records of all IPP participants
- Report incidents to AMA HQ within 1 business day
- Instruct students in club safety rules and provide AMA Safety Code
Downloadable forms and welcome packets are available upon request. Training is offered at no cost. Clubs may not charge IPP students.
